Tom Schofield

Co-Founder, CEO

  • Tom has spent the last 23 years, in oncology and pathology working at various reference labs across the country.  A dedicated professional who cares deeply about patient care and the histology profession, Tom also proudly served his country as a US Marine from 1996-2004.  Tom is a graduate of Post University with a BS in Business Administration and Management.

Michael Brennan

Co-Founder, CCO


  • Mike is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross where he was an English major. After spending nearly 30 years in private secondary education as a teacher, coach, Admissions Director, Vice-Principal, Principal and President, Mike transitioned to the corporate world as a Solution development Executive in Secure Shredding, Asset Lifecycle Management before moving to business development in the Life Sciences. Mike also has a master’s degree from Boston College as well a certificate in the Leadership for Change program at Boston College

Dr. Jane Brock, MD

Medical Director


  • Dr. Jane Brock obtained her medical degree and a Ph.D in developmental biology from University College London, UK, before emigrating to the U.S. and joining the pathology faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston in 2008. She served as Medical Director of the BWH Surgical Pathology Grossing Room from 2012 to 2023, and working with C/CAN has advised on curricula and taught courses on laboratory quality management and breast pathology locally and internationally.

    Since 2017 she has been Chief of the Breast Pathology Division overseeing a busy service of >7,000 cases annually, with responsibility for quality improvements and fellow training. She is an Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, and recognized expert in Breast Pathology both nationally and internationally, with over 50 named peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Brock oversees the ASCP-sponsored Motic Telepathology service for Haiti, supports the Partners In Health efforts at BWH, and she has spoken nationally and internationally (Europe, Asia, Africa) about technologies capable of transforming cost-prohibitive, highly-skilled cancer diagnostic workflows into those useful in low-resource countries, without compromising quality.

Richard Cartun, Ph.D., MS

  • Dr. Richard Cartun’s career began when he was hired as the Immunopathology Technician in July of 1978 following graduation from the University of Connecticut, where he received his degree in Pathobiology. Richard performed the first immunoperoxidase “stains” (now called “tests”) at Hartford Hospital in1980. Over the next several years he obtained a MS degree in Healthcare Management from the Hartford Graduate Center/RPI and a PhD in Pathobiology, also from UConn. Dr. Richard Cartun served as the Director of Histology at the Martin M. Berman, MD, Immunopathology and Morphologic Proteomics Laboratories. Dr. Cartun boasts an impressive and impactful 44 year tenure at Hartford Hospital where he focused on Immunohistochemistry, revolutionizing diagnostic pathology in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Cartun has an extensive list of publications and has given countless presentations for state, national, and international organizations including the National Society for Histotechnology (NSH), the Society For Applied Immunohistochemistry (SFAI), Applied Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Pathology (AIMP), and the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). He is also a founding member of the International Society for Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Morphology (ISIMM). Richard and his wife Ellen reside in Avon, CT. They have two sons, four grandchildren, and are also BIG UConn Basketball fans!

Rohin Mehta, MD

  • Dr. Mehta is a Board Certified AP pathologist currently serving as the Chief and Medical Director of Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Mehta attended his GI fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC and his Surgical Pathology fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia, as well as his Cytopathology fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Mehta has a BS in Neuroscience from Franklin & Marshall College and went to Medical School at Saba University School of Medicine. Dr. Mehta also serves as Associate Professor of Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University at Community Campus. Dr. Mehta brings a wealth of clinical pathology experience to Splice.  He recognizes the histotechnology shortage broadly and supports Splice Histology’s vision of providing high quality histology support to laboratories that are having staffing shortages.

Maria Melone MSA, CPA, CVA

  • A leading M&A advisor to healthcare businesses, Maria’s professional mission is to help business owners navigate the complex landscape of strategic or private equity transactions. As a Certified Valuation Analyst, she is an expert in helping her clients understand business value based on tangibles, as well as complete practice value like business climate, market demand, and competition. Currently, Maria is a Managing Director with Caber Hill Advisors, and to date has been involved with over 500 transactions.  Prior to Caber Hill, Maria founded two companies to facilitate dental practice transactions, worked in corporate development for American Dental Partners, Inc. and started her career with KPMG’s Boston Office in their Healthcare/Life Science audit practice. Maria holds a B.A. in Economics from Gettysburg College and a Master of Science in Accountancy from Bentley College. She received her CPA license in 1998 and became a Certified Valuation Analyst in 2014. Outside her extensive transaction experience, Maria has served as a Board Member for several organizations, including the Academy of Performing Arts, Sibling Connections and currently Boston Center for the Arts.

  • Rudy is an investor in and advisor to a variety of healthcare and technology businesses. Rudy’s visionary leadership and fervent honesty makes him a key player on Spice’s BOD. Rudy’s impressive background is just part of his story. As a former owner and CEO of Apothecare Pharmacy LLC, a large institutional pharmacy in Massachusetts serving mainly residential care providers, he skyrocketed revenue and oversaw continued growth after a recapitalization and facility expansion, expanding Apothecare into one of the largest pharmacies in the Northeast, and ultimately selling to a private equity firm. Rudy is also the founder and manager of Grey Holdings I, a commercial real estate portfolio based in Greater Boston with seven properties that is valued at close to $40 million. Within his community, Rudy is consistent in his passionate, action-oriented strategies: he cares deeply about giving to others and serves as an advisor to multiple nonprofit boards. On a more personal level, Rudy is excited to join our Board because of Splice’s unique solution to the healthcare industry’s unmet need and looks forward to being part of the team that revolutionizes the Histology field.
